Aurora Forecast and Viewing Tips

Auroral Activity Prediction

This website offers short-term forecasts of the location and intensity of the aurora. The two maps display the predicted aurora for tonight and tomorrow night.

The brightness and location of the aurora are often depicted as a green oval. The maps provide a visual representation of the predicted auroral activity.

When and Where to See the Northern and Southern Lights

The best time to view the aurora is typically within an hour or two of midnight, around 10 pm. It is important to find a dark location away from city lights for optimal viewing.

Northern Lights

The aurora occurs in the northern and southern polar regions and is commonly known as the northern or southern lights, respectively.

Southern Lights

The aurora is visible in the southern hemisphere as well. The Southern Lights, also known as the aurora australis, are best viewed from high-latitude locations in the Southern Hemisphere.

Viewing the Aurora

For the most optimal viewing experience, the Space Weather Prediction Center recommends finding a location with minimal light pollution.

If possible, travel away from city lights to darker areas where the aurora will be more visible.
