Whitey Herzog, Hall of Fame Manager of Cardinals and Royals, Dies at 92

Whitey Herzog, the Hall of Fame manager who led the St. Louis Cardinals to three pennants and a World Series championship in the 1980s, died on October 10, 2022. He was 92 years old.

Herzog's death was confirmed by the Cardinals. No cause of death was given.

Herzog is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Lou, and their three children, Debra, David, and Jim.

A Coaching Legacy

Herzog began his coaching career in the minor leagues in 1969. He managed the Cardinals from 1980 to 1990, winning the World Series in 1982.

After leaving the Cardinals, Herzog managed the Kansas City Royals from 1991 to 1994. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Herzog was known for his gruff personality and his innovative managerial style. He was one of the first managers to use sabermetrics, and he was a pioneer in the use of the designated hitter.

Herzog was a beloved figure in St. Louis and Kansas City. He will be remembered as one of the greatest managers in baseball history.
